After years of living in their East Sacramento home, a multigenerational family approached Designed + Curated with a vision: to completely reimagine their kitchen into a space that felt modern, functional, warm, and perfectly suited to their daily rhythm. What they wanted was more than an updated kitchen—they wanted a true gathering place where three generations could cook, connect, and enjoy being together.
This is the story of how we guided them through a Sacramento kitchen remodel that balanced timeless design with modern functionality. Below, I’ll walk you through the vision, the challenges, the craftsmanship, and the final transformation—while sharing ideas and inspiration for your own Sacramento-area kitchen project.

Understanding the Homeowners’ Vision
As with any design project, I begin by understanding how a family actually uses their space. This Sacramento kitchen had great potential, but it was burdened by outdated cabinetry, limited storage, and a layout that didn’t support the needs of a busy household.
The family wanted:
They also wanted the kitchen to feel cohesive with the rest of their house—a classic Sacramento property with hardwood floors, natural light, and architectural charm.
During these early conversations, I listened closely to what mattered most to them: accessibility, functionality, and creating a space everyone could enjoy, from grandparents to children.
That clarity shaped every decision that followed.
The original kitchen had several challenges typical of older Sacramento homes:
Even with these limitations, the layout had potential—and the homeowners were excited to create a kitchen that finally lived up to how they wanted to live.
Crafting a Distinct, Functional Design
We started by re-envisioning the layout to improve flow and optimize storage. One of the first design decisions was to introduce hutch-style cabinetry—elegant, functional, and perfect for the family’s desire for easy-access storage.
One of the most impactful updates was adding a second dishwasher—a simple choice that dramatically improved functionality for a household that cooks daily and hosts frequently.
This is the type of detail that makes a major difference in real-life usability.
Smart Sacramento Pantry Storage
We redesigned the pantry to include:
This freed up counter space, eliminated clutter, and allowed the main kitchen surfaces to feel open and calm.
Material Selection: A Sacramento-Inspired Palette
Sacramento homes often blend modern design with natural textures, and that became a guiding theme.
We selected a palette that felt warm, bright, and timeless:
Together, these choices created a space that feels both contemporary and connected to the home’s original character.
Embracing Natural Light
One of Sacramento’s design advantages is the abundance of sunlight, especially in neighborhoods like Tahoe Park, Arden Park, Curtis Park, and East Sac. We maximized natural light by:
Once the major structural and material choices were set, we introduced elements that gave the kitchen personality.
Black Bar Stools
These added a modern contrast against the soft tones of the room, creating a defined breakfast bar area that encourages gathering.
Brass and Black Fixtures
This combination brought warmth and sophistication without overwhelming the design. Fixtures can transform a kitchen instantly, and here they added just the right amount of style.
Thoughtful Lighting Layers
Lighting can make or break a kitchen. We implemented three layers:
The original hardwood floors carried a warm undertone. Instead of competing with it, we integrated those tones intentionally into the cabinetry and wall palette. The result was a harmonious color story from floor to ceiling.
Balancing Bold and Subtle
The family wanted modern styling without losing the grounding comfort of traditional elements. By mixing:
The Coffee Nook
This home already featured a unique coffee nook the family loved. Rather than redesigning it, we wove it visually into the new kitchen with cohesive color and material choices. It became a feature instead of a distraction.
Eliminating Clutter
We designed concealed storage and work zones so the kitchen would stay clean, calm, and easy to maintain—even during busy weekdays.
The final transformation was exactly what the family imagined:
The kitchen now supports everything from quick breakfasts to large-family dinners, from school-day routines to multigenerational weekend cooking sessions.
This remodel wasn’t just about aesthetics. It was about designing a space that supports connection, comfort, and joy.
Ready to Transform Your Sacramento Home?
Working with this family reaffirmed why kitchen remodels are among the most meaningful projects to design. The kitchen is where life happens—and when it’s designed with intention, it elevates how a home feels every single day.
If you’re beginning your own remodel journey in Sacramento, I would love to help you bring your vision to life.
